PERC H310 active drives are listed in foreign config

Dear all,

I am having a situation which stop me to moving on. I would like to seed for some advice.

Before that, my server R320 was running with the following:
- H310
- 2 x 600G SAS disk (Physical Disk 0:1:0 & Physical Disk 0:1:1) @ RAID 1, OS and data store

I shutdown the server and add 2 x 1.2TB SAS into Physical Disk 0:1:2 & Physical Disk 0:1:3.
Boot the server up.
However, there is a foreign config alert shows up.

The Foreign config as listed just the same as the active config including both VDs and PDs
i.e. 2 x existing 600G SAS (0:1:0 and 0:1:1) and 1 x existing VD

In this situation, should I import the foreign config or clear it?

Noted 1: the 2 x 1.2TB are listed as foreign state when I check it in PD page.
Noted 2: There was a power lost a few weeks before. The server booted up when power back. This is my first time to reboot the server since the power lost even.

Thank you very much for your helping.

Tim,

Just a quick note, if you don't have a backup then this would be a good time to get one, just to be safe.

You would NOT want to import the foreign if the Virtual Disk that has the OS/data is bootable and the data is present, the reason being is if the controller didn't have the correct information that Virtual Disk wouldn't be working. If you were to import the foreign you would tell the controller to use the drives configuration data and not its own, which could make the Virtual Disk not boot then.

So if the Virtual Disk that has the OS and data is the only active one, and it is currently accessible, then you would want to Clear the foreign.

Tim874536,

Let me clarify a couple things with you.

Are you able to boot to the OS, is the data accessible?

When you added into Physical Disk 0:1:2 & Physical Disk 0:1:3, where those slots previously empty?

The drives you added, were they from a previous configuration/server?

Are you able to provide some screenshots of the Virtual Disks, as well as the Physical Disk pages?

Let me know.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your reply.

Here are the information.
1. Yes, it can boot into OS and the data is accessible.
2. 0:1:2 and 0:1:3 is empty before
3. The new drives are newly bought, however may be tested by seller before shipping out
4. I am not able to provide yet. But I remember just like the following

Thank you very much.

So to confirm, the 2 newly installed drives, which have no data, are the ones showing as the foreign, correct?

If that is correct then you can simply CLEAR the foreign on those drives, then configure them as needed.

Hi Chris,

the 2 newly installed drives which have no data. <== Yes, new and no data

the 2 newly installed drives are the ones showing as the foreign (view)  <==== No, what I remember is that no new drives are shown in Foreign View. The only Physical drives and Virtual Disk showed in Foreign View were the existing VD and PDs

That's why I am confusing whether I can clear the Foreign Config OR I should import the Foreign Config in this situation.

Thank you Chris.

Thank you Chris.

This is true that in my case, I have to clear the foreign config because the current config in the RAID card is valid and both VD, OS and data can accessible.

Here are the screen captures for other reference.

CurrentView_BeforeCurrentView_BeforeForeignView_BeforeForeignView_BeforeCurrentView after clear Foreign and new 1.2TB VDCurrentView after clear Foreign and new 1.2TB VDFinal boot with addition 1.2TB VDFinal boot with addition 1.2TB VD
