U2419HC, Lenovo Ideapad 720S-13, USB Type-C no signal

Hello everybody!

I need help with connecting my new U2419HC through Type-C 3.1 (Thunderbolt 3) port on the Lenovo Ideapad 720s-13IKB (81BV). My configuration is 8250u i5 version with 13" FullHD screen, 8gb ddr4 and 256 NVME SSD with Windows 10 Home Edition. Everything (drivers, system, BIOS .etc) is up to date. The U2419HC  has native support of Type-C connection (so I don't need any HDMI/DP adapters). I am unable get video signal to work. It's charging my ultrabook (PowerDelivery is working like a charm) and integrated USB-Hub is working flawlessly, but I have "No signal USB Type-C" message on display and "Display connection might be limited". Windows message when I'm connecting my U2419HC to Lenovo Ideapad 720S-13. I don't know, which side this problem is - hardware (Intel UHD 620, USB Type-C port of my Ideapad or Dell monitor/type-c->type-c cable that comes with it) or software (some drivers or Windows 10 itself). I've left thread on Lenovo forum about ultrabook side, but still didn't got any answer there. On this forum in first place I want to know, what kind of type-c->type-c cable comes with U2419HC? I've read the manual, and there is no specific information about it. Does it support video signal transfer (DP alt. mode in this case or even Thunderbolt 3 compatible), or this cable is just for Power Delivery/USB-hub connection? Thanks in advance for your help!

Click my name and private message me the monitor service tag number, monitor 20 digit serial number.

The User's Guide never specifically mentions thunder or bolt. It mentions USB 3.1 Type-C and USB Type-C.

Page 9 of the User's Guide states =
USB Type-C/DisplayPort 1.4
The USB 3.1 Type-C port

Page 11 states =
1 x USB Type-C (Alternate mode with DisplayPort 1.4)

Test the U2419HC and its provided USB Type-C cable (C to C) on both of the laptop TB3/USB Type-C ports. Press the U2419HC #2 Input Source button, check USB Type-C. Turn Auto Select to Off.

If still no go, you will need to purchase a true TB3 to TB3 cable.

Thanks for your answer, Chris! I've PM'd you information you've asked for. Yes, I noticed that in User Manual there are no mention of the Thunderbolt specification. And all USB information in the manual dedicated to the port, not to the cable supplied, so I've asked about the cable in first place (and of it support for DP Alternate mode, which is mentioned on page 11 for the port). I've already tried every possible manipulation with supplied cable, still no signal. But I forget about one thing - when I've connected it to my LG V30+ smartphone, I've got everything - my homescreen on the monitor, battery charging and mouse and keyboard support, which USB-receiver was connected to monitor's USB-Hub. Could it be a sign that everything is all right with this cable, and trouble is with my Lenovo ultrabook?

Certainly looks that way. But only Lenovo could tell us for sure. Consider posting on their Forum. Provide to them all of the troubleshooting done out here. They might agree that you need a true TB3 to TB3 cable.

Chris,

Thanks for your time and attention to my problem. I've already posted at the Lenovo Forum's next day I've purchase monitor and faced this problem - https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-1xx-3xx-5xx-7xx/Ideapad-720S-13IKB-81BV-Type-C-DP-Alternate-mode-still-doesn-t/td-p/4332768 - but, unfortunately, still didn't get any answer there. I will also try to post to Intel's forum, may be, their support/community will be more loyal and experienced in such questions.

You could go here, on the right top click, "Contact Us". That would enable you to speak with Lenovo Support directly.

While our Lenovo support is out of duty on weekend, I've found soluthion - bought Type-C->DisplayPort adapter (Gembird Cablexpert USB-C to Displayport A-CM-DPF-01) in local store, which, to my suprise, got it to work with supplied DP->DP cable! (So Dell USB-C - DisplayPort (470-ACFC) adapter could be also a working solution, I just haven't found it on stock in the nearest stores yesterday).
This is the most easy, but not esthetic soluthion, 'cause now I have both of my Type-C ports occupied (1 with charging and USB-hub function, 1 with video signal output).

I still can't understand, why it doesn't work with "1 cable to rule them all" (Type-C->Type-C), as it supposed to be. I have looked once again at supplied Type-C cable, and found lable "Type-C Gen2" on it, also I've found approvement on Reddit, that supplied Type-C cable works for video, charging and data-transfer (USB-Hub) same time - https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/9f0gvz/dell_usbc_monitors/ (see "EDIT" on the top of first message). So supplied cable is good, and it can't be the reason of my trouble. But the fact that adapter works approves that DP alt. mode over Type-C works on my Lenovo Ideapad 720s, and why it can't deliver signal through Type-C cable is mistery for me...

Also one strange thing I've noticed - I was getting "Connection limited" warning when I was connecting Type-C cable to the far from me Type-C Port, which by the manual is just for charging (so it's not USB 3.1/Thunderbolt 3/DP 1.2 compatible), as in near to me Type-C port I've got nothing - no signal, no warning. But adapter worked in nearest post, while far port now acts for charging and USB-hub data transfer.

If anyone have any thoughts about this situation, it will be very interesting for me to listen.

This is our understanding of your Lenovo Ideapad.
720S13.JPG

* No DP symbol supports only data and power. No Video
* DP symbol supports data, power, and video and cannot drive TB (Thunderbolt) devices such as TB16
* Lightning bolt symbol supports data, power, video and can drive TB devices such as TB16

For this U2419HC monitor, you should be using the USB Type-C port on the right.
