Maximum individual hard drive size for R610 Perc 6i controller

Hi everyone

I have a Poweredge R610 with a Perc 6/i SAS controller. I would like to repurpose this as a backup server for our LAN, by filling the remaining 4 SAS drive bays with the largest compatible drives available.

Dell's information states that the largest drive the R610 that can be purchased is a 1TB 7200 RPM SAS drive. Has anyone tried a larger drive in this chassis?

Jjbreen67,

The Perc 6/i can support up to 2TB physical disks. It can have Virtual Disks larger than 2Tb, but the physical limitation is 2TB. Now with it being a R610, it will support using the H700 raid controller (part # 1THG8), which will allow you to exceed the 2TB limitation.

Is this 2TB physical disks per slot or in total? I'm looking to make a total of 3 or 4TB in a RAID 5 Configuration with the PERC 6/i

From what I have read, this should be “per drive” (aka “per slot” since 1 hdd per 1 slot). So “in theory” the 6i should allow for 6 x 2TB HDD = ~12 TB total drive space (with associated loss for parity and formatting, etc)

From what I can gather... the drive tables in the PERC 6i firmware and datapaths seem to be the issue.

For me, I plan to build an UNRAID system with a T310 base/Xeon X3440, and will likely do a blog on it. Not sure I will use the H700 as suggested by others... but at worst, I’ll populate it with 2TB server type drives and jack up the memory and graphics to run some virtual machines.

Hello. I know this is an old thread, but I just purchased 2 Dell R610s w/ PERC 6/i controllers as starter/initial servers for my small IT consuiting business and a small development project I am working on.

I (luckily) purchased 2 sets of SAS drives to try in these servers:

- Seagate 1.2TB 10K SAS drives

- HGST/Hitachi 900GB 10K SAS drives

 

Naturally I'd prefer the larger capacity drives, so I tried setting one up with the 1.2TB drives. Upon installation they seem fine, all lights green, even says "ready" under the configuration utility. However as soon as you try to build a a virtual disk and save it, all physical drive statuses trunk to failure and nothing will allow me to initialize the VD.

On a hunch, I tried swapping out the 1.2TB drives for the 900GB ones. Everything works fine...

So how can it be said that the PERC 6/I on an R610 has a max. individual disk capacity of 2TB? Is it my firmware? Is it the disks?

Incompatible is some other way. Young asked for the DELL part number. Seagate makes drives for generic retail AND for Dell controllers (and IBM, HP, etc.), so the version is important. What you describe - the drive showing up and unable to configure in a VD - is usually a firmware issue where the generic firmware does not match the settings on the PERC controller and they are unable to communicate to create a VD. That's not a slam dunk, but seen it enough times to give it a good chance of being the reason.
