1. Battery Warranty

Must know:

  • Normally, laptop batteries are covered by One (1) year warranty support
NOTE: This warranty is separate from any warranty that the system may carry, including Premium or ProSupport. A system that does not have ProSupport Plus, Extended Battery Service, or similar entitlement that specifically covers the battery beyond one year will not receive a replacement battery under warranty if the battery is older than one year.
  • Customers can now purchase an optional Three (3) year warranty support battery.
NOTE: The legal warranty period for the laptop and the battery may vary in your location. The battery warranty is related to the laptop invoice date. You may be asked to provide the serial number of the battery, which corresponds to this date range.

See Dell Knowledge Base article How to Check the System Configuration on Your Dell Computer; it guides you on how to identify the battery SKU and differentiate between these two types of battery support. If it contains the wording 3 Years Limited Hardware Warranty, then the battery has a 3-year limited hardware warranty. Some battery descriptions may show the abbreviation LL for Long Cycle Life; this also confirms that the battery has a 3-year cover.

Features Standard 1 Year Warranty Battery Optional 3 Years Warranty Battery
Express Charge Support Yes No
Yes (for Latitude xx20 onwards)
Watt Hour (Wh) Longer
Example: 9 cell battery with 97 Wh.
Same (for Latitude xx20 onwards)
Lower
Example: 9 cell battery with 87 Wh
Same (for Latitude xx20 onwards)
Note: A 1-year battery can be sold with computer warranties of 1 through 5 years. The battery warranty length is limited as it is a consumable item. A 3-year battery can only be sold on computers with a minimum 3-year (or longer) warranty. In either case, the battery warranty can expire before the end of the computer warranty.
Notes:
  • The battery has a sticker, usually with a barcode that can be used to determine the age of the battery.
  • The Serial Number is 20 characters long and begins with two letters that are CH, JP, KR.
  • The sticker may be similar to the above examples.
  • Go to Dell.com/support to find out the warranty status of your computer. Enter your Service Tag or click Detect Product, then go to the Warranty tab.
  • If your battery warranty has expired, a new battery can be purchased at the Dell Parts and Upgrades website. An additional charge may occur if an on-site technician is required to install the battery.
NOTE: The availability of Dell-branded parts and upgrades might vary in your location. If the parts are not available on our website in your location, contact your local Dell authorized partner or reseller (English only - select your location).
  • For applicable platforms that support the Long Cycle Life (LCL) Battery option, the latest BIOS update modifies the battery charge algorithm to extend Long Cycle Life (LCL) Charge behavior to Adaptive charge mode or AC Use mode.

2. Check the Battery Condition

Checking the health of the battery is an important step in troubleshooting battery-related issues and helps identify if an aging battery requires a replacement.

Battery health status can be checked in multiple locations, such as by using the Dell Power Manager app. In the BIOS or UEFI, running a hardware diagnostic test or using the battery LED indicators

Learn How to Check Battery Health Status on Dell Laptops.

Notes:
  • When the battery diagnostics fail, go to the preboot system performance check page, and enter the Service Tag, error code, and validation code for repair options.

  • If your battery warranty has expired and the battery diagnostics fail, a new battery can be purchased at the Dell Parts and Upgrades website. An additional charge may occur if an on-site technician is required to install the battery.

  • Dell has a rigorous qualification process by which all Dell batteries are validated to ensure proper functionality, performance, and safety. Dell strongly recommends using a compatible Dell battery that is purchased from Dell that is designed to work with your Dell laptop.

  • A normal characteristic of a rechargeable battery is that its operating duration decreases over time. Eventually, the battery must be replaced. Based on this characteristic, consumed batteries may not be covered under warranty.

  • Dell also offers an online diagnostics test; go to the Dell online battery diagnostics page.
    • The test starts automatically.
    • You may be prompted to install or update the SupportAssist program, if so, follow the prompts.

When reporting a battery failure, be aware of the following:

  • The battery serial number is required before a replacement is ordered.
  • The serial number is printed on a sticker on the battery - usually 20 characters long and beginning with two letters, such as CH, JP, KR.
  • For Dell laptops with a removable battery, you may be asked to check with a known good battery (if available).
CAUTION: Using a third-party or non-Dell battery or an incompatible battery may increase the risk of fire or explosion. Replace the battery only with a compatible battery purchased from Dell that is designed to work with your Dell computer. Do not use a battery from other computers with your computer.
NOTE: Like most laptops, Dell laptops use lithium-ion batteries, which can swell due to battery age, the number of charge cycles, or exposure to high heat. While a swollen battery pack does not represent a safety concern, you should not use damaged or swollen components. If you have an issue with a battery pack swelling, we recommend discontinuing use and replacing it with a Dell-authorized battery. See our Swollen Battery Information and Guidance.
