Precision 3520 Bad SSD Connection

Hi,

I've been having problems lately with my Precision 3520 laptop with it showing a blue screen of death at least a few times a day.

I have tracked down the problem to the SSD. It seems as though any small bump or vibration, and the SSD becomes dissconnected breifly causing the computer to freeze and BSOD a few seconds later.

I have cleaned, checked, and made sure the SSD is installed firmly in it's place. However, at this point it can't even boot up anymore because it doesn't detect the SSD at all. Here is the SSD and where it connects:20191109_163124.jpg20191109_163017.jpg20191109_163133.jpg

To further diagnose the problem, I need some help figuring out the contact points.

At the end of the SSD, there is a cut out for a screw with what looks like a copper contact that contacts the screw and holds everything in place:20191109_163031.jpg

This all screws into this plastic holder lined with a kind of silver foil which has been stripped from the area where the SSD and screw supposedly contact it. (Note: in the picture above, I added the aluminum foil during my troubleshooting.)

This plastic holder connects to a slot underneath it but I don't see any place for the silver foil to contact anything.

Here are some additional pictures of the plastic holder in question as well as undernearth it where it slots in:20191109_163144.jpg20191109_163216.jpg20191109_163224.jpg20191109_163230.jpg20191109_163235.jpg

So basically I was wondering if anyone knows if there is supposed to be an electrical connection where the end of the SSD, screw, and plastic holder is?

Note: There is a metal "thermal plate" that covers the SSD which I have ommited to make the SSD easier to access.

Thanks for any help!

Please tell me if any pictures are errored.

I have a laptop that seems to be having SSD connection issues. The screw that holds the M.2 SSD in screws into a plastic "holder" that is lined with a silver foil. My question is: Do M.2 SSDs need to make any kind of electrical contact at the end where the screw goes in?

Thanks!

Ok, guess no one cares. Must find other computer site with an actual community.

Hi,

I've been having similar issues on my Precision 5510 (with a 1TB M.2 PCIe Hynix SSD). I was experiencing random freezing followed by BSOD, which never led to a memory dump being created. On a few occasions during boot I got the message that the hard drive was not found. I was however able to reboot successfully on a next attempt. I then noticed that I could trigger a crash by physical movement (gently shaking, bumps or vibration) of the laptop, which leads me to believe I also have a faulty SSD connection. Obviously my warranty just expired a few months ago so now I'm considering to open up the laptop myself to try to fix this issue.

Did you have any success with your approach?

Thanks for any tips regarding this issue!
