If you’ve been running the Windows 10 on your computer, even with the newest hardware, you might notice that the operating system seems to slow down or lag at times where menus open slowly or sporadic mouse and keyboard movement. The fixes below have had good reports of fixing Windows 10 slow performance.
While searching around for some tweaks, I came across a thread on the Microsoft Community forums and one suggestion was to change the settings for the Paging File to fix Windows 10 slow performance. By default, in all versions of Windows, it is set to allow the system to manage it.
How To Fix Windows 10 Slow Performance
If you’re noticing slow performance in Windows 10, try changing the Initial Size and Maximum Size to the Recommended File Size for both.
- Click on Start and type “Performance” and click on “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows” (as seen in the image above)
- Go to the Advanced tab and click on Change in the Virtual Memory section.
- Now uncheck the option Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
- Select the C: drive where Windows 10 is installed and then choose Custom Size. If you have a 2nd hard drive, then disable the Page File on your C: drive and enable it on your 2nd drive and set that one to Custom Size. Then change Initial Size and Maximum Size to the Recommended Values by Windows which is in the Total Paging File Size For All Drives section.
- NOTE: Your recommended value will be different than the image below, use whatever your’s shows
- Now click Set and then hit OK to save the settings.
- Reboot the computer for the changes to take effect and fix the Windows 10 slow performance.
Leave your feedback in the comments if this showed improvement for you or not.
If you experience worse performance, you can go back into this setting and change it back to System Managed Size

Option 2: How To Fix Windows 10 Slow Performance
This tip is an oldie but goodie. These settings have been around since Windows XP, but you can still apply them to Windows 10. These will help visually speed things up in Windows 10, especially if you have an older video card or a machine with less RAM. You can read the article Tech Tip: Visually Speed Up Windows 8 (7/Vista/XP).
- Search for your Control Panel
- Click on System
- Click on Advanced System Settings in the left column
- Under the Advanced tab, click on Settings in the Performance box
I always uncheck the following:
- Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing
- Animations in the taskbar
- Enable Peek (sometimes I leave this one on)
- Fade or slide menus into view
- Fade or slide ToolTips into view
- Fade out menu items after click
- Slide open combo boxes
Hi, Why my recommend size is only 1406mb, its use to be 3000mb+ on Window 8…
How much RAM does your computer have? It could be related to that and the way Windows 10 calculates its needs.
i have dell inspiron 15 3542 , RAM 4GB , HARD 500GB. i have windows 10 but now my laptop does not shutdown , mostly i have push the power button to shutdown . please guide me
Does the shutdown process just hang and get stuck? If so, how long have you waited for it to complete. Sounds like you could have an app or service getting hung at shutdown.
I just turned on the Forums for this site. Since your topic isn’t directly related to this article, please check out our Windows Forum and post your issue in there.

Hi… Why HP 14 ac-101nx slow start up? And slow running on apps??
Hello after i following ur instructions also my lap is slow plz let me knw best solution for speed up pc
Try changing value to 5120 that seems to be the sweet spot for most computers worked for me when 2999 and 3500 weren’t working. Just make sure you have atleast 16 gigs of ram and alot of storage space.
May be your video drivers or display drivers are not suitable matched Re-install it
where can i find video controller driver for windows 10?
i have lenovo 300 N100
please help
Try looking at support.lenovo.com
that guy is not useing 10 these tips are useless
Who’s not using Windows 10? The screenshots above were posted from the Technical Preview and the tips still apply to the RTM version. I’ve been running Windows 10 since the early Insider Previews.
True!? Windows 10 is very slow!. This OS software is that very good.
The boot is very slow but after enabling fast boot in the power options menu and disabling startup apps it has decreased the boot time by a lot!!!
Im using the free upgrade and its very slow. I cant seem to find that fast boot u said
100 % proved…
Mostly Speed is also Dependable on Video drivers for example if u have ATI Display Adapter or any other card, Windows 7,8 and 10 installs automatically Standard VGA Adapter Driver that defects the speed of Visual Memory and Virtual Memory Also … Re-install using compatible drivers of matching card specification or model number only …
set to the value recommended by windows? where? what recommended value!?
Now why would anyone expect someone who writes an article like this to ever bother to come back and reply (sarc).
See that fella Robert Russell replying to a bunch of posts? That’s the author of the article. Before you say the (sarc) was there, I know. It’s for those who don’t read who wrote the article.
BTW, nice job Robert! Thank you!
..but, he does highlight the recommended size in the image he has. It’s on your virtual memory page – says “recommended.”
If you look at the picture above, you’ll see where it shows the Windows recommended value. It varies on every computer based on specs and RAM. Take that value from the bottom section and type that into the box for Initial Size and Maximum Size. Click the Set button, then click OK and restart your computer.
you should make this more clear. I wasn’t sure if recommended should be put in both boxes until I scrolled and read this comment, knowing someone would ask it as I was also not sure.
Appreciate the tip though, I’ll update you on how it works out. I found your article looking for a solution to file explorer being extremely slow since updating my work computer from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Super frustrating and wastes so much time. Hopefully this works. Do you have any recommendations for this issue?
On the very bottom of that box, directly underneath the space where you type it in, it will say something like “current”
“recommended” . And it shows what it is recommended to be.
It really works…just take your time and READ the steps.
yup.what reccomended value did they mean?
Yes what is the recommended value?? Should I use what you have in the example?
If you look at the picture above, you’ll see where it shows the Windows recommended value. It varies on every computer based on specs and RAM. Take that value from the bottom section and type that into the box for Initial Size and Maximum Size. Click the Set button, then click OK and restart your computer.
Yes but prior before this task is the paging file size is “system managed” so the question is how do users find the right value for their pc
Read the instructions and look at the screenshots. You’ll see a recommended size and you need to set that as the min and max.
Ok, I am obviously blind. I see it now, thanks
When it is set to System Managed it will show you the recommended value in the bottom area like the picture above. Write that number down, then change the setting and type that number into the min and max values.
When i played game it was so slow on window 10
What kind of video card do you have? Make sure you find the latest drivers available for it…that can make a huge difference when gaming.
The name is League of legend.
He meant which Video Card not Game. Do you have
GeForce or something different ?
Hey Sang, give this a shot. Try typing the word legend with a capital l as in L.
If you are having trouble with this just hold down the Shift key and press the l key. Your results should look like this:
L
Thanks for the tip. This took my windows 10 from borderline unusable to quite snappy!
Also greatly appreciative of the tip – it has restored my computer to its previous speed
Yes, windows 10 is VERY slow. I applied the fix above and presto. Snappy. :)
Ahhh…what is this for??…i did try it…it improves the processing speed and what not but still the lagging part drives me nuts…like the startup…or even clicking the start menu for the first time…thanks
This just helps general speed for me. Other factors would be your video card and processor. Another thing to check is how many programs you have starting up when your computer boots. Windows 10 does delayed startup for non-essential apps, which could cause a delay if you’re trying to open the start menu right away and apps are trying to start in the background.
Just automaticly downloaded windows 10 on my new ASUS computer. The mouse is shaky, computer is slow and had to restart twice since this morning. What is going on?
Thanks! This was great! Had the lag, used this solution and it’s like night and day!
Solved the issue on my computer. Thanks a bunch!
Ok I will try your recommendation laterþ Another question; can I make all text larger, that is ALL websites show by default fex 120? Thanks for helping
Margret, what browser are you using? Internet Explorer or Google chrome or other?
Google Chrome:
You can just enter chrome://settings/fonts into your browser and hit “Enter.” Now you can change all your font settings.
Internet Explorer:
Press the small gear on the top right corner of your browser, then click on the “Internet Options” button.
On the General tab of the dialog window that pops up, look to the bottom of the popup window and select “Fonts.”
Change your webpage and plain text fonts as desired.
hth
Thanks a million. I am using chrome and I think this is working :) Yesterday suddenly I got a mess. on my computer it wanted to update my mouse/touch pad. Ok – afterwards I restarted it and my touch pad is totally different. Steady and agreeable!
One other trick that works if you only need to enlarge the display for a single web page, and this trick appears to work on all browsers.
Hold down the ALT key and press the numeric-keypad plus key, and this will increase the display size for everything on this page. ALT- will shrink all text on this web page.
Hi,
this way didn’t work for me. It is still very slow.
when i using the internet on window 10.
It was slow.
Please help me.
thank you.
Correction: When I was using a web browser to peruse the internet on a system running Windows 10, I observed that the operating system was running slow. Any help would be welcome, thank you.

This adjustment took my Win10 from being unusable to right as rain. You are a god among nerds.
Made a world of difference on my dell xps studio i7 64 bit upgrading from Windows 7 pro, thank you!
I’ll echo Christina_Z’s comments. After upgrading from Win8.1 last night, I wondered if I’d need to roll it back, my PC was running so slowly. I adjusted the settings as you suggest, and it appears to be back to its normal perky self.
Thanks!
thank you very much it works so good ^_^
Thank you, working fine now.
It worked. Thanks a lot !
Made a big difference! Thank you!
Exellent solution. I tried the usual defrag, clean up and Trojan search to no avail but this worked wonderfully. Thank you.
I just tried this fix and it worked for me. Thanks!
Just tried this fix. PC works a lot better. Thanks!
This video below will give you some idea thus:
1. Adjust logical memory.
2. Shutdown window smartscreen.

I was very disappointed from my new lenovo as windows 10 was really running slow and I was thinking to switch to Mac, but after applying the tips in these videos really speed up my windows 10, thank you Russell
Wow, what a difference that made – thanks for the tip. Meantime Microsoft made the mistake of inviting me to report on my Windows 10 experience – they are now in no doubt about how i felt!
So far it looks like it’s helped on mine. Thanks
I tried the fix above and it did speed up windows 10. HOWEVER several apps I has were not working Pantech pC Suite (P203) Nero, So I just went bacl to windows 7. I also used the performance deakl for it & man am I trucking now. Hope I am not forced into windows 10, as far as I am concerned it is a piece of $)*$@!!!!
Thank You
It helped
Not 100% but SO MUCH BETTER
The super slowness is SO FRUSTRATING
Anything else I could try to reach at least 95%
Thanks again
I have changed performance settings as suggested. I wasn’t having a problem booting up but two websites i access often were very slow so maybe it was their sites not windows 10. One was banking the other a genealogy site. My pc although new not fast, a mid range laptop and download speeds very slow in France so I expect that, but seemed slowere since upgrade to 10. Anything else I can do?
Satisfied with you advice by the way.
Had my son install Linux. What a difference! I will NEVER go back to windows. Much faster and more reliable than windows!!!
Unfortunately that’s not a solution for everyone in a business environment. Even though you can run some apps in Linux, not everything is compatible.
Worked a treat thank you so much!
Great fix! Thank you! I was getting extremely frustrated due to not understanding what was causing lag, because it’s certainly not my rig! This substantially reduced lag I was getting when opening multiple windows or the start menu.

Hi – I did what you said – last night and it went like a dream… came to computer tonight and it is worse… one question… where do you get the number from… I just copied the ones in you screenshot.. not a good idea probably.. but there was no other indication of where to find these numbers. When I into the process the little boxes (custom size) were blank. There was no instruction on where to find the numbers.
Please help me… or I am going back to windows 8.0!!!! at least that worked for me!!!!
Oh, I read some more – oops… I have now put the minimum numbers in but don’t know what the maximum would have been before I put the random numbers from the screen shot in.. eek – how will i know??
I think if you set it back to System Managed, reboot, then go back into these settings you’ll be able to see the recommended size for your computer. Then you set that value as your min and max.
Thanks I did that late last night – but did not comment here – it seems to have worked.. I had to to a repair on the internet port again tonight – had to do that once before.. it should not happen i would have thought – as was not connecting to the internet… sigh – all good now, hope it stays that way, thanks for your advice.
Thank you for the info. I have followed your instructions and everything seems to have speeded up very well. My Windows 10 install was only 2 days old and the web was running like dial up. Maybe it would have sped up as the new system bedded it self in? maybe not?. I have a question for you that is bugging me. The Microsoft recommended low end of the page file is 16mb, this is very very small. Why? Is this set low for a reason? For example “Safe Mode” and if so are we playing with fire if we encounter “Safe Mode” problems in the future?
Please add below to above points
1. Run Disk cleanup
2. Defragment drive
“Set Initial Size and Max Size to the value recommended by windows”
Where should we find recommended values ??
Just below where you put them in the two blank boxes… took me a while to figure that one out too!!
dear robert russell…i did what you adviced..and it worked on my laptop..it is as previous working…thank you very much.but want ask one question from you.if windows teammake new updates and everything become to work good and faster must we make these changes back??must we check back “automatically manage paging file size for all drives”??thanks for good answers and advices
You are a genius!!! I changed the settings for the Paging File to your numbers and I am back to my speed with Windows 8.1. Thanks!!!
thank you for giving us this Possible fix! it really helped my new windows 10 to boost its performance.
guys!
try this it will really help.
Thank you so much for this fix. I tried it yesterday and my computer is now running as fast as it was on 7! I was so frustrated, because it was running soooo slow. Your fix did the trick!
This definitely improved my situation. It is now running Windows 10 as fast as it was the day it downloaded. Yesterday I couldn’t even get my start menu to pop up!! Thanks for creating this page, it really helped me out. I will share this on Facebook so others can get help!!
I’m still having a few probs… One is throwing me off the internet at times and having to restart to make things happen… Any thoughts? I have dine a disk clean, defrag and deleted history. My computer is an hp and only bought it earlier this year.
You could try some of the steps I posted in this article about slow internet speeds.
http://www.tecklyfe.com/2015/08/18/windows-10-slow-internet-speed-fixes/
It worked for me… Thanks a lot Robert. I am about to dump my thinkpad t420. After following your suggestions it is super fast.
I’ve just done this and the change is fantastic, computer is working like new again. Thanks so much.
I have Hp laptop and its specs are
2.2 GHz Intel Core i5-5200U with Intel HD Graphics 5500
4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3L SDRAM (1 x 4 GB)
Please help me with some setting as I have tried the above but I am not getting the real speed which I used to get on my Windows 7
Hi, I also (got some tips from an old computer guy) turned all my settings off so that the only time my computer turns off now is when I do it – it does not go to sleep and stuff like that. – that really helped.. the only problem I have now is that I need to do a wi fi fix every time I turn my computer on.. happy with speed now since doing this sleep mode thing. This old guy also said to check all the updates have downloaded – if computer went into sleep mode or turned off, etc they might not have all downloaded. I have done a disk clean up, defrag, deleted browsing histroy and all of that also..
Teresa
New Lenovo all in one, had dealer update Windows 8 to Windows 10 before taking home. System was incredibly slow. Followed your initial instructions which were easy to follow. System and speed improved dramatically. Thank you, Robert.
System improved after following your recommendation, but not as perfect as when I was using W8.1. It looks this is happening only under certain configurations. This is happening in my PC, where I have installed a lot of apps and external devices : I have 4 other Windows10 machines working and presenting no issues.
Definitely has helped rectify the problem, thank you!
Wow! That definitely did it. My pc games are now back to speed. So grateful. U guys are great!
All browser, IE, Firefox and Chrome were are taking a extra ordinary long time to open and search, The CPU and Ram are running near to or at 100% capacity, even Firefox apologises for being slow. It makes my Vista desk top seem fast.
The only one that responds with a normal response is the new Edge browser !
After altering the paging file as recommended above all the above browsers are back to normal, nearly as fast as my Vista desk top. Thank you
Thank you for the article Robert, and thanks in advance to anybody who answers this. I just bought a new machine, not a very good one, but I’m surprised how slow it is. Normally when a new computer comes out of the box it feels lightning fast, but this one with Windows 10 is really slow. Like you said, hanging when I just open the start menu, extremely slow internet, lots of lag all around. Even the mouse lags, moving slow and hanging. I was going to try this, but I have a question before I do. The recommended allocation is lower than what is automatically being allocated. I’ve read about this solution on several sites, and it seems to be the opposite for most people. Could that be the cause of my problems, or will lowering the allocation just make matters worse? As you can tell, I know nothing about this subject.
Do you know how much RAM your computer has? The values are usually based on that. The good thing is, if you try changing your settings and it makes it worse or the same, you can always go back and change it to automatic.
Yeah, it has 4GB of RAM. I know it’s not a lot, but as it came pre-installed with Windows 10 I figured that was enough. I’ll go ahead and try it, then if it’s worse just change it back like you said. I was just worried about some catastrophic failure. The reason I have a brand-new computer is because the Windows 10 update literally killed my old machine. Couldn’t even boot the old girl up roll back the update. Thank you very much for the advice and the really quick reply. It takes those clowns on the Microsoft forums days to answer, then they just give some generic response that doesn’t answer anything at all. In my case (with the dead machine) pointed me to a thread that was a completely unrelated issue.
No problem, be sure to reply back and let me know if it works for you. If it doesn’t, try posting all of the specs and maybe we can find a setting that works best for you.
It seems to be working better from what I can tell. The mouse issue has definitely improved, or I should say is no longer an issue. I haven’t noticed any other lag yet, but it’s not a constant thing (sometimes it seems fine and other times it’s just a hassle) so I should probably check it out for a day and see how it acts. But even if it just fixed the mouse it was worth it, that was really annoying. Appreciate the help and I’ll follow-up with you and tell you how it’s going.
yes shutdown process get stuck.sometimes it takes 2 or 3 minutes but mostly it does not shutdown. one day my laptop was fully charged but battery completely dried up . so how can i find that app or service that making problem
i had window 8 , recently i have istalled window 10. my window 8.1 started up very slowly and sometimes opened programs slowly ,now i have window 10 but the problem is same. Recently i read BAD_POOL_HEADER and my window restarted. plz tell me what’s the problem and how can i fix it
Hi this was realy helpful :) although now i have another problem. I have gtx 970 (4gb), and 16gb ram and all this fancy crap, but still it shows somethin like 2400 mb although it should show like 4000 or something. Iv updated video card from nvidia own site as well as from windows harware list tab. Can’t find any help on internet. Please man you are my only hope. Id really appreciate your help :)
I think you installed a 32bit version of Windows, x86 or 32bit version of windows has a memory limit of around 2-2.4mb of RAM, no matter how big is the ram installed in your computer still it will be usable unless you install the x64 bit version of windows
I have seen this before and has helped in the past. Windows seems to be sporadic with speed. It has a fairly fast start up but all apps are slow. Then I leave it on sleep with a handful of apps open for a few hours and come back to it — super quick. Then I leave a bunch of apps up again, and a few hours later it’s super slow (like right now). I have a Lenovo z40 which has 8GB of RAM with 2GB dedicated to graphics card (crappy GC btw). I have Windows 10 on my C: drive then have 8 gigs of SSD (or SSHD, I don’t remember) of D: drive. Windows recommends only 1906 MB to be allocated. I feel like this isn’t enough because I have a ton of memory. How do I utilize windows 10? (i7 processor with 2.4ghz, so the processor shouldn’t be the problem).
Note: when I say “super slow,” I mean it takes only 10 seconds to open the Mail app, but it’s considerably slower than Windows 8, or what it could be/ has been.
Thank you for the article. Unfortunately this did not work for me. I have scoured the net and the only other suggestion I’ve come across is to do a clean install. I have so many apps that I don’t still have the keys for (lost emails, boxes, etc), I really don’t want to have to start over. Is there a way to image just my apps? Stupid question, I know, but I’ve been surprised before. Thank you in advance.
Thanks. I tried this and initially it didn’t work. It started out allocating my full 16384MB of ram and when I changed it to the recommended 2907MB for min and max it didn’t take. It said it was set to a custom size of 2907MB for both but was still allocating the full 16384MB even after rebooting. Set it back to automatically manage page file size and then changed it again to a custom size of 2907MB min and 3072MB max and rebooted. Now it shows it only allocating the 2907MB and it is running fast again. If it didn’t work for you the first time, make sure that the custom changes you did actually are being allocated correctly.
It worked. Thank you very much for the advice. It works just as smoothly, when I had windows 8 on my laptop. Keep up giving good advice!
Hallelujah, my sanity has been restored! My computer is much faster now, (possibly even better than before the Windows 10 download), THANK YOU!!
thanks a lot my pc is now faster THANK YOU!!
I like I can leave a reply here….that said, it didn’t work. I’m using the final release candidate of WinX Home. Irksome too that others have inquired about other solutions and the author can’t seem to bother to answer any of them.
I haven’t answered because I haven’t found other solutions that have worked. So far this has helped 95%+ of the people that have tried it. If anyone finds other solutions, please leave it in the comments and I’ll add it to my article.
Seems to have solved my problems!
Thank u sooo much for this. I was really freaking out
I wanted to try this solution with a BRAND NEW COMPUTER (Asus 302) but it did not have a recommended Windows size only said something like “system adjusted” so – how do I know what right figure to put in there???
Thank you so much for that advice…pc back to normal despite Win 10 upgrade!
Still the same.. Did everything.. Black screen is long and loading in start up is so slow compaired to windows 8.1..
You not only. Saved my sanity, you saved my computer. I was about to throw it out a window. No pun intended.
Microsoft promised faster start time. Startup doesn’t seem any faster to me. Or is it only my imagination.
Thank you.
Thank you, it is way faster now!!!
Fantastic! fixed the problem! – – – its strange though that setting the “suggested” values should work when the OS must be working around those figures anyway?
= = = if its not broken dont fix it – – –
System won’t let me change. Screen shows faded options which won’t allow you to click on
Dude, uncheck “Automatically manage paging file…” And then select your drive which you want to sacrifice, click on Radio button “Custom Size”. Define your size and then go to twitter.com/ProPanjabi or @ProPanjabi and follow me because I helped you ?
Followed instructions to the letter and it worked! No idea why but very happy that it did. Everything runs way faster than before. thanks!
You say “Set Initial Size and Max Size to the value recommended by windows”, but the 2 spaces (custom size, initial size) are blank, and I don’t know what to type in.
This solution fixes the problem of very very slow running of W10 for me. It also fixes what looked like a wifi problem as well.
The Recommended number is the second of the three in the Virtual Memory dialogue box – see the screen shot from Robert above.
Hi,
Thanks for sharing! I had tried many things but this change certainly improved the boot speed. It is still slow loading my profile but it gives me something else to tweek.
Followed each step and what do you know no more lag. This was a little difficult for me however as I am visually impaired. It seems that I can’t back to my previous screen preferences that I had before the install. But still doable. Thanks.
It works! So simple and so effective! I was so annoyed about how my notebook slowed down after updating from Windows 8.1 to 10…now it is at its top speed again!
The best solutions are the simplest ones! I’m gonna spread the word, thank very much!
Noticed substantial slower speeds when operating multiple programs on a newly purchased computer with Win 10 installed. Did not experience this when using Win 8.1. This fixed the problem. I don’t understand how, all I know is that it is now operating like the older version. Thank you.
Mine is running fine BUT – when I turn it on, it says it is connected to the internet but it is very limited.. I have to do a ‘repair’ or do a restart… this is SOOOO annoying… any hints or tips.. I have checked HP website, turned router on and off etc.. but no joy.. thanks Teresa
So far so good. Looks to be a mark improvement. System was very slow and seemed to be getting slower. The value my system was set to was way higher than the recommended, wonder why?
Thank you. I am sharing that. Its working :-)
Looks like a great improvement.
Great has speeded things up
Thanks, this seems to have helped a lot!
What is the recommended file size or where do I find it? I run tons of Corel programs, and find myself waiting at least 30 seconds every time I search for a file for it to even pull up anything…
In the same window, just below, you can find the recommendations
Brilliant! Now I can watch streaming website videos. I’m always in awe of guys like you who know how to do stuff like this. Thanks for being here for us.
first impressions are not bad
I have done what you said.
I will let you know
Thanks Alan
Your fix only worked for one day. Now my computer is back to being very, very slow even after I eliminated a lot of start up programs on my computer.
Did you check the settings again to make sure they didn’t go back to the defaults?
Thank you for this article. My machine is finally running fine again. :)
Thank you very much for your valuable suggestion. windows 10 is now running very smooth.I have another question for you : I use a very high speed broadband connection, but while downloading any app from store, it is downloading very slowly. Is there any way to boost up the download speed for store?
Not that I know of. Are your download speeds using your browser decent? I’ve noticed some updates from the store seem to download slow for me too but normal internet downloads are fine.
Thanks so much! Worked perfectly!
How do you know what the ‘Initial and Max size recommended by Windows’ is? Is it the same for anyone using Windows 10?
it’s shown as the picture, it’s the fourth red box.
I finally got fed up with the slowness of my PC under Windows 10, and did some digging and found this post and another article which suggested the same fix.. I have one question though.. While the performance seems MUCH better. The menu launches on click IMMEDIATELY, even clicking the time on the lower right IMMEDIATELY shows the calendar, requesting the desktop display IMMEDIATE responds.. All in all it’s soo much better.. Gonna cross my fingers that this is not a FLUKE.. :)
And now all my apps launch like LIGHTENING!!! Possibly FASTER than BEFORE the Windows 10 upgrade!!!! OMG.. thank you thank you thank you!! The page file was set to a little over 8500MB in the Windows 10 upgrade, setting the minimum to 400 and the maximim to 1940mb makes a BIG difference!!! The ONLY issue I now have to resolve with my Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade is a video card compatibility issue.. My video card is not compatible with Windows 10, but I have a driver that solved my immediate issue (video display not filling the monitor) to a usable standard.
Though I have had no issues with upgrading my laptop from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, I was curious why the laptop had no performance issue post upgrade.. Though the laptop is MUCH newer than the desktop computer, they both have similar specs in terms of memory, harddrive size and processor speed.. Turns out the upgrade on the laptop did a MUCH better job of setting the default page size.. This is likely why the laptop doesn’t have issues..
Anyway.. I’m rambling.. This worked.. Thanks for the tip!!!
You’re brilliant. I was seconds away from reverting back to 7 I was so frustrated with waiting over 2 minutes for the file explorer to load.
Thanks – pages seem to open faster. But, before I installed 10 from the original 7, I was getting weird image/photo shifts on web pages. Half images would show up or/and some information, text included would be blacked out. So, I installed 10, and voila – that issue is gone. I followed your recommended steps to help speed things up and two things happened. 1). Screen goes black only after minute or so, but is still set at 15 minutes. This was an issue when 10 was first installed., I reset it to 15 and it was fine. I did your fix, and it’s back to going dark in a minute, BUT, it still says it’s set at 15 minutes? Huh? 2). I am not back to getting those weird partial screen black outs, misplaced images etc.
simply brilliant
This did the trick! :D thank you so much
I tried doing what you said and when I tried to click on “apply” it would not go. I tried to work around it–nothing works. I also have a problem with gmail. I send and it takes minutes to do anything, then I get a message that my mail was not sent. This never happened with Windows 7
It worked well at first my mouse is moving slow as I’m typing this comment, However I’m still appreciative of the time I had with my fast PC.
70% better than previous time…..
Where do I find the size values recommend by windows?
Next to the label that says “Recommended:”
It’s the second to the last entry on the Virtual Memory window.
This fix did not work for me. I have a Quad Core processor with 4Gb of RAM but my computer is running so slowly it’s as if I was running a 286 computer with 512 Mb of RAM.
My latest and greatest HP Envy laptop cost $1300 and it runs horribly with Windows 10, as it did with Windows 8. It takes a half hour to boot, every click takes minutes to respond. I would gladly trade this to get a 386 machine. I have only loaded Trend Micro Antivirus as far as software goes.
Microsoft’s best days are behind them. Bring back Windows NT and Windows XP !
I had to use my 5 year old Mac just to reliably enter this comment, and I am not even a fan of Mac.
I simply can’t believe what I am experiencing with the HP Win machine – do they NOT see this in test?
OK so no sooner than I write this, my PC starts acting a lot better. It still lags by seconds, but not by the minutes of lag for the first several days after loading Win10 (and behavior that I had occasionally seen with Win8). Other note is that I have very small % disk space used and auto 1/week defrag; so its invalid to suggest a disk defrag to help this. Historically post WinXP I have felt that interplay between Windows8+, antivirus SW and the network grind things to a near halt at times, particularly after a power cycle.
So new development that is relevant : in the HP Envy laptop the Seagate hard drive had a complete early-life failure (10 months and not used much in that time).
I had the hard drive replaced (Western Digital now) and the Microsoft Store people loaded Win 10. This seems to run fine so far.
Therefore a hypoth would be that inside the laptop Win 8.1 and later Win 10 were both dealing with a sector of hard drive that went bad prior to the complete failure. How the software+OS would be able to work around bad disk space I am not sure, unless part of writing the disk is to read test chunks of what was written before continuing to write. If the OS cannot teach itself where the bad hard disk sectors are, it could conceivably continuously retry using bad disk space and waste time before giving up and writing to somewhere else. Apparently eventually another HDD sector went bad in the Seagate disk, this time in the Windows OS space, making it no longer able to boot at all.
Maybe stated more clearly, my Seagate hard disk likely had a sector go bad after the first few months of ownership (degrading performance in the past for Windows 8). Within a week of me downloading Win 10 free over the net, the HDD got an additional bad sector in the FAT and NTFS file system region (there were error messages pointing to that). The behavior was an infinite and automatic reboot, with every other boot ending in FAT file sys err, NTFS file sys err, FAT, NTFS, FAT…
So if you have not owned the PC for long, have not used much % disk space and you have “tried everything” and nothing helps the slow performance .. something to try would be to do an experimental replacement of your hard drive? Probably not, as it is too painful to do. I am just glad my HDD finally failed completely, forcing me to see the root cause of the slowness in my individual case.
This modification did absolutely nothing to speed up Win 10
Also, Don’t install malware such as IO Bit uninstaller *ahem*
Further to fix problems with Windows 10 you might try:
– Disable the SuperFetch services (Windows Key + R, Type services.msc and press enter, find SuperFetch and disable) This service is designed to speed up the computer but there are bugs with this on certain system configurations, disabling may help, if it makes it worse then re-enable, if better, leave it off.
finally, this solution can solved my pc problem.
thank so much bro
This fix worked well the first time I tried it for my Yoga 2 Pro Win 10 PC. Then for some unknown to me reason, it slowed down again. Upon checking the page file size. I found that it had changed back again to a lower value than I had set it for.
So I reset it to initial value =3 Gb, max value =4 Gb, The system seems to be working well again. I wonder why it got changed ?
I like Bob Russell’s method, at least for now. All power to him.
What is Microsoft support doing on all this ? Nothing ?
I got brand new HP laptop computer almost $500 and is doing the same thing with Windows 10 old computer Windows 7 no problems lightning fast
i have got a windows 10, HP with A8 AMD processor. yesterday my pc hanged up and refused to shutdown even pressing the power button for a long time nothing happened. so i decided to remove the battery. and now today i started my laptop but it is running extremely slow. microsoft edge icon is missing from the taskbar (its just a blank space there but if you click it after some time edge starts) the windows menu button is not working. please tell me what should i do?
My minimum is 16 MB and Recommended is 1279 MB, Currently allocated is 7677 MB. If I changed it to 1279 MB I’d actually be making it smaller. Is this not the case? Is there another solution?
Your physical memory is faster than a pagefile, so it makes sense that the recommended is smaller.
Thanks so much, worked a dream.
I have a Dell Inspiron 660S with i3 2120 CPU @ 3.30 GHz
With 4 GB of RAM.
While I am sure not the latest or fastest, it should still be fast.
So pleased I found your website. (Thank goodness for Google)
Thank You
OMG…thank you! I was at my wits end with this slow computer and that fix made it 100% better!
This did not help. What I’m having issues with is just the mouse not responding for about 3 seconds after I’ve used the keyboard. Any suggestions are appreciated.
I just tried this and it seems to be helping.
My internet has slowed up incredibly (and so too did the rest of my systems although not as dramatically)! This fix did not help.
I had a similar problem. The fix that worked for me (until now) was by increasing the paging file size, the procedure for which was given by RB Russell, as briefly described below:
Control Panel> Adjust Appearance and Performance of Windows > Properties > Advanced > Change > uncheck automatically manage paging file size… > Custom size > select size and max size > (I set it to about double the size recommended by Windows > Set > OK > restart PC.
If your internet is slow, try the fixes here: http://www.tecklyfe.com/windows-10-slow-internet-speed-fixes/
I’m impressed. This definitely solved the problem.
Worked a treat, thank you!
Wish I could say it worked for me too, but it didn’t.
It worked! Great result!
Great, this sorted slow response on chrome / internet and printer.
Now another thing if anyone can help:- being in the UK we tend to use the date as DDMMYY or DDMMYYYY. I can only get DDMMMYY which is not compatible with our Sage programme so need DDMMYY which is not listed on windows format under ”change date and time” Any answers.
YOU are a LIFESAVER!!!!! Worked great!!!!!
I wish I’d never “upgraded” to windows 10 – I preferred windows 8 despite its faults and 10 is just too slow.
This helped SOOO much. Thank you for posting the idea!
Just finished the changes. Waiting for my computer to start up…
So far, so good! This is such a relief… I was so frustrated, I was about to throw my laptop out of the window!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I greatly appreciate you taking your time to help others.
Much love & thanks!
This helped me out quite a bit. My four year old laptop is running windows 10 better now, but still not quite as smoothly as it ran Windows 8 or even 7.
Didn’t really help but thanks anyways.
Very good tip, Thanks, this helped a lot!!!
Great – it worked for me (I set Minimum Size to 400Mb and Maximum size to 1910Mb). File moving now instant, before the tweak it was taking 5+ minutes.
Changing the Initial Size and Maximum Size to the recommended file size for both solved the “sluggish” problem and my HP computer, running Windows 10, is performing like the day I bought it.
Thank you so much for this advice. I just purchased a new computer that already had Windows 10 and noticed the same problems with the old computer that I had upgraded. I remember your advice that solved my problems back then and it has fixed my problems on the new compture.
I did exactly what you asked to. It worked fine for a few minutes after resarting and then again there was a lag. I checked those settings again and the manual thing was unchecked and it automatically assigned higher ram. What to do?

Thank you. Helpful.
Hi Robert – I have Lenovo G710 with i7 and 16GB Ram (as this is maximum for my system). It came with windows 8.1 and I then upgraded to windows 10. ever since then it is painfully slow and erratic at times. I have done exactly how you describe by changing the Initial Size and Maximum Size to the Recommended File Size for both. However, no difference…
Any other tips?
Thank you
Did like you said, working fine now, many thanks.
this option makes it wores for me
My god, I don’t know who can help my new computer and window 10? It will kill me! All has problem: extremity slow, even couldn’t save document directly? have to find the file, save as, then save is in today’s document… waiting…. then said NOT responding…
I wonder if the 10 is not ready why sell it to customer? Suffering…
I went store for several times… they say no problem… but problem! say you have pay for $40 to check software…
I used this set of instructions 2 weeks ago and it worked well but now the machine is back to being extremely laggy again. Double checked and the settings are still set.
I miss my Windows 7
My laptop got extremely slow and laggy after a big update Windows 10 did some weeks ago. It was getting me so crazy. I don’t have a new laptop, but it was working very well even with the new Win 10 (I had Win 7 before), up until that specific update some weeks ago.
I tried this advice and it seems to work ok now. It definitely got back to being as fast as it was before the shitty update and I am satisfied with this. I hope it stays like this and does not get laggy and slow again.
Thank you!!!
****BTW, I’ve been using Windows 10 ever since August, in case anyone is wondering, and as I said the laptop was working very fine until some weeks ago. I really wonder what that update was. When it got installed it had the same screen as when I installed Win 10. If anyone has any idea about it, feel free to comment.
i have Lenevo thinkpad E430 , RAM 4GB , HARD 500GB. i have windows 10 but now my laptop does not shutdown , mostly i have push the power button to shutdown . please guide me
Hello, I’m currently running windows 10 right and it came with my brand new laptop which is suppose to be built for speed and gaming, was getting frustrated at why my laptop was stuttering at times and would lag at times when opening programs and or multi tasking, when opening firefox and sometimes opening multiple page tabs to look at other websites and watch videos it would stutter and sometimes cause my computer t freeze had to force shutdown the computer 6 times since i got it. I tried this trick and so far so good. On windows 7 the allocating page file was over 3000MB but it seems windows 10 drops it below 3000, but by increasing this value it definitely helped smooth out windows and stopped stuttering. I currently own the MSI Stealth Pro-006 so you can see my frustration when i was noticing this lag and stuttering when playing videos or opening programs since this laptop was made for speed and performance. I still notice some lag when opening steam but i think this is more towards being optimizing steam to properly work on windows 10, but so far so good will keep updating to see if this remains good.
Bless you and your knowledge… Saved me
Great tip, my laptop is definitely faster and doesn’t heat up… Thanks
Seemed to work on my hp
well, i did everything that is mentioned above, but it doesnt seem to be working on my laptop. it’s still as slow.
well, i did everything that is mentioned above, but it doesnt seem to be working on my laptop. it’s still as slow. can anything else be done?
If you have enough ram and enough space try changing the value to 5120, that seems to be the sweet spot for most computers, it worked for my stealth pro and hasn’t given me any issues since the value change to 5120.
Is your laptop brand new? Or have you been using
This for a while? When did you upgrade to Windows 10, this settings will only work to smooth things out such as browsing opening applications. Etc…it wont make your computer any faster then what it is. However it won’t fix optimization such cleaning any clutter your computer may have that can cause your computer to slow down, or remove any unwanted startups that run in the background, if your computer is running slow you may need to do a maintenance check.
Thank you so much for post. It worked for me also. However, i have a doubt…Do i need to change for all drive or only for ‘c’ drive where all programs are installed. Looking forward for your reply…
Usually you only have one pagefile, so I would only change the C drive
Wow! What a difference! Thanks for your help!
This worked well. It also addressed the problem of Adobe Flash eating all the memory and bogging down the system.
Yes, this is happened just like Windows7 launching long time ago, that OS more stable after 3 years later, everytime microsoft launch a product, it must be give a headache.
I’m not understand, when big company such as Microsoft develop an OS, they must be tested it at least to 100 people maybe? it’s impossible to test a new product just to 10 people. From a hundred tester? nobody feel this OS is slow?
Microsoft is funny sometimes.
I upgraded from Windows7, and must find dozen of tutorial to fix many problems. Windows7 is very fast, boot time 40s until my computer ready to use, but Windows 10 take 4 minutes, fast boot on or off doesn’t matter, fast boot is a joke. lol
Sometimes windows freeze, sometimes program not responding, hard drive usage 100%, etc…
Thousands of people have the same problem, but no update from Microsoft, great!
I’m really sure my pc spec is enough for this OS, i7, 16GB ram, ATI R7, 1TB SSD, but now I feel like using pentium 4.
You write, “Set Initial Size and Max Size to the value recommended by windows.” Well, I don’t know what value this is! So this instruction is useless.
When you get to that screen it’ll show you a recommended value based on your PC specs. If you look at the screenshots or watch the video you’ll know what to look for.
The recommended value is written at the bottom part at that window. 3000MB should be fine for quite all sistems
I have tried changing the file size as described, but it made no difference at all.
Alan G. Barker Just tried your fix for Windows 10 Running Slow Did what you said in Control Panel SUCCESS !!!! Hooray Bin Cleaning and trying different things for over an hour Just a few minutes Great got my old 9 year old Dell 9400 with added Terabyte BACK to normal Thank You All very Much
paging file, I have been doing this since win 98
I was told it’s standard practice (his company)
I do it soon after an install.
Reason, less fragmentation of your HDD.
Suggested size is 2500 if system has 4 – 8 GB ram
2000 if you have 16 GB ram or more.
According to the text “change Initial Size and Maximum Size to the recommended values by Windows which is in the Total Paging File Size For All Drives section.” This is ambiguous since it implies there are two different values, one for Maximum and one for Minimum. However, in the Total paging file size for all sections there is just one “recommended” value. Should I use that for both minimum and maximum?
Yes, the values you need to enter are “Initial Size” and “Maximum Size”. The value you need to use in both boxes is the “Recommended” value displayed in the bottom section.
So far so good, however I’m now stuck at the custom size field.
Total paging file size for all drives it states: minimum allowed 16MB: Recommended 1397MB: Currently allocated 704MB. My question is what do I type into Initial size (MB) & into Maximum size (MB)?
Looking forward to your help
Thank you
Jude
Okay. WOW! Just WOW! This worked like a wonder!! Thank you SO much! You are a lifesaver. Thank heavens for people with minds like yours!
Worked pretty good but I still lag a lot may be a different issue for me.
What are the specs on your computer?
I have an i7 490 on an MSI 7 gaming board with an R9 290x it’s been laggy since windows 10. All new drivers and bios.
Sounds like you have decent specs on your machine. You could try the suggestions in this article and see if it helps at all: https://www.tecklyfe.com/tech-tip-visually-speed-up-windows-8-7vistaxp/
Will do thanks.
WOW man all I can say is you are awesome thanks!!!!!. I should have done this 2 days ago and just realized that only peeps with complaints dropping you a note. Thanks for your help man
Thanks for the reply! I’ve received mixed feedback, but usually more positive than negative and I’m glad it was able to help you!
I used both of your tips and the pc is much faster! Thanks!
Oh my gosh, thanks so much. I was about to lose my mind. I had about quit getting on my laptop at all, so annoying. Lagging, typing was a whole sentence behind, forget Facebook, I was just reading my mail and walking away. I followed the instructions (now I am very green, technically-challenged, but even I could follow it) Now, knock on wood, my laptop is acting almost normal again!!!!!!!! Thank you soooooo much!!!!!
Amazing. GOD bless you for sharing the best idea =D
thank you for the helps =D
so happy to get my laptop faster
thank you sooo much :D
Your suggestions were spot on, and proved enormously helpful.
Option 1 worked immediately!!! THANK YOU from a tech-idiot who barely knows how to turn on the laptop!!!!!!
Hi, just have win 10 at the first time and it’s really slow compare to windows 7.. this old little tricks worked very well.
Thanks!
Great!!
It worked for me.
Thank you for the tip
Good stuff.
Works well for my notebook which lags on system itself as well as internet browsing.
Now its faster than before once both option applied.
Anyway, option 1 has affect my notebook immediately.
Thanks alot & keep up the good work..!
Thanks Robert. Paging size fix worked for me. You saved me £000’s (I was going to go and get a new laptop tomorrow). Thanks so much for making my day. Mark – Bristol, UK.
Keep in mind that windows 10 is a steaming pile and you will start seeing a drop in speed after another month or so of use, or sooner. The size of the page file doesn’t matter much as long as it’s big enough, and windows 10 seems to slow down unless you regularly adjust it. The minimum I’d recommend is a size equal to your RAM, and the max that I would use is double your RAM amount. Just reset it whenever it feels slow. Thanks for this crippled OS, microsoft.
Thank you! Still slow, but so much better!
I am on a hp stream windows 10 and when I hit adjust the appearance and performance of windows it won’t load, the circle just spins and it’s taking forever. Any ideas?
My browsers were all crawling until I did the first fix. Thanks SO much!
Thanks for this tips. I Was wondering if Windows 10 is an upgrade or downgrade. I doesn’t make sense for older window to be faster than new one.
Thanks for the post. Tip number one worked like magic. My laptop is fast now. Cheers!
It kind of worked. In the initial size I’ve putted 1335 and in the maximum size 5000. But i guess that windows 7 still works the best. I’ve got a laptop, quad core AMD cpu, 2 gb dedicated video card an 4 gb of ram, it’s not a bad laptop, but i hoped that windows 10 to be better than w7
Really awesome helped on 4gb ram pc a lot
I only see two options. Where are the other 8?
I never said there were more than 2 options.
Thanks mate you’re a life saver!
You saved me from uninstalling and installing windows to fix it and installing all apps all over again which takes a life time!
Hey all, I want to say thank you all and especially Robert for having enough patience to help others. Here I am, hoping to get some help.
Ok, so the problem is:
Laptop – Lenovo y700 (i7, 8GBram, gtx960m) was very slow on windows 10. I have fallowed steps given above, and it did fixed the lag. Now laptop is fast BUT it is impossible to use it. As soon as you start working it keeps crashing all the programs and tabs in browser and giving a messege like “not enough virtual memory”. WHen I google this problem the solution is to put pagefile size back up. SO basically I am in a loop.
I tried bunch of different values of pagefile size. Nothing works properly – either lags or crashes.
Any help??
I found the solution to Windows 10 running extremely slowly. The first thing I did was visit distrowatch, second thing was do some research, third thing was replace Windows with a Linux based OS. Hey presto, I now have a fast machine again, with additional benefit of knowing my personal data isn’t being used without my consent to build a digital profile of my life (that will then be used to attempt to brainwash me into buying second-rate products dressed as premier kit. You know sometimes you get off a train, breathe in, and then realise how much the train you just left stank, I haven’t had to think about that smell in a while now!
Linux is a good alternative for some but might not work for others. What distro did you go with?
Im planing to go back to win 7 I did everything to make this stupid win 10 faster It did not work and it is driving me CRaZY
anyway thanks for the article
can u help me i got my pc 3month ago and now its being too slow i don’t know what is happening i have window 10 i applied ur arcticle but still it seems like same what should i do for it any recommendation somw are saying windows issue and some for RAM ALL THAT STUFF helpme plz
Could you provide any specs for your system? Even though it is new, the specs can still make a big difference.
Followed the option 1 and BOOM great fix.
I’m glad it worked for you!
This ain’t a f*****g solution,I tried the first step and it f*****g screwed by system. I have rebooted my system 25-30 times now, it has been 6 motherf*****g hours but I am not able to open anything, the control panel will take decades to load now because it never did so that I could f*****g undo what I did. I can’t even shut down my system normally I have to force it on the power button. ??????
I’m sorry you’re having issues. What did you change the Pagefile size to and how much RAM does your machine have? Making this change shouldn’t have caused any of the issues you’re having.
I am a bit confused and have read through all the comments and haven’t found the answer to the person asking the same question. Would really appreciate if you could clarify….there are three values in the Total paging file size for all drives section; Minimum allowed, Recommended, and Currently Allocated. There is an initial size and a maximum sizes box. Does the value from recommended go into the initial size and the currently allocated into the maximum? Example: Minimum = 16 mb, recommended = 1339 mb, currently allocated = 6002. Which value should I use for the initial and which for the maximum?
In your case you would use 1339 for both the initial and for the maximum. You’ll want initial and maximum to be the same value, which is the recommended.
Hi, I want to know why would my computer started out soo. slow? Even when I restart it, it still shuts down very slow. I want to know what was wrong with it. And even when I play online games, its more lagged than Windows 7 and Windows Home Premium. So I was frustrated for the slow performance than it took.
Hi, I haven’t tried this fix, my question and some background: Since installing a new HD on my HP laptop (I cloned the faulty one) the machine is just as slow if not worse than it was. We use it only for storage and streaming movies, the machine buffers continuously. My 10 year old desktop runs perfectly, no buffering at all. (Well, some sites do…) I have tried wireless and ethernet, same problem. The machine is also very slow to start up and shut down, apps open slowly. This started before the unwanted Win10 upgrade, but at that time the old HD was on it’s way out. Should this fix make a difference, or could there be another issue?
My windows 10pc slowdown down after download but after adjusting paging file, the speed has increased. Thankyou
You’re welcome! Glad it worked for you!
Thanks for your advice, now my computer goes much faster
Hi .. After switching from win7 to Win10, the machine got too slow, movies, games started lagging or freezing .. Pilated videos, it was just plain bad. Today i came across your site and followed your recommendation with the PAGE File, And, wow!!!! It looks like the machine speed and performance has been restored. I also made sure that the C: drive had atleast 15 GB free space and also DEFRAGMENTED. Now it is working like a charm. Thanks for your tip.
Hi Robert, I used both tips and definitely noticed an improvement from option 2. Thanks!
This totally helped me! Thank you!! Did it on a 10 year old iMac and a new laptop, both with Win 10. Massive improvement on both, excellent.
I Just wanted to pop in and say thank you very much! I used the first option and its a world of difference. I finally took the plunge this week and decided to upgrade from 8.1 to 10 but I couldn’t figure out why I had been having so much UI lag with my 16gb of ram and 4.4ghz quadcore. But with this guide my issue is finally solved. Thank you so much!
My computer just updated to Windows 10 today, and became infuriatingly slow. I tried the first option above, and so far it seems to have worked amazingly well! It seems to be faster than it was before the update! I have no idea what I just did though, or what other problems it might create, if any? Let me know if there is anything I need to know!
Thank you so much ! My laptop has been running incredibly slow since windows 10 was installed. Took me 5 minutes to open up chrome! I did both things you said and although it’s not as fast as it could be it’s a lot faster.
Thanks a million. My Lenovo Z510 was almost unusably slow to boot. I would switch it on then go away to amle coffee and come back to find it still booting. These fixes have saved me buying a new computer
My windows 10 pc also jut suddenly became slow a couple weeks ago. Maybe after an automatic software update? Anyway the problem was opening any program, including task manager and filer explorer. It would think for 30 seconds before opening and stall any other attempts to do anything with the computer until done thinking. Once a program was open it ran like usual. Well I did your option 1 and so far it’s back to being fast! THANK YOU! I just wish I knew what made it slow down in the first place.
Thanks Robert!
thank you, this worked for my computer!
This is good advice but you need to edit your post to make it much clearer that you enter the same value in both boxes, the recommended value. That is poorly explained in your article. I like everyone else had to go to the comments to see if it was explained properly.
Tried your ideas today. Clear instructions for an amateur. Certainly some improvement, so thanks.
DMC
Worked for me thank you so much!
My windows 10 Ultrabook was running OK for general use but was extremely slow for CAD design work with all my CAD programs after a windows automatic update. I tried the fix option at the top of this page and it fixed my problem immediately. Huge thanks.
I tried your recommendation for fixing a slow computer by going to the “Performance” page in control panel and changing the initial and maximum settings. After a reboot, i was unable to get online, so I undid the change. No harm done, but I wonder if I did anything wrong.
Here is something interesting for you to ponder: I followed the instructions as mentioned in my previous comment and had poor results, so I went back to the original settings. For some reason, however, my computer is now performing well. Is it just coincidence, or did the change/rechange operation have a beneficial affect?
Changing it like that probably cleared the pagefile and re-built it so that might have helped too. If it slows down again you could try the same steps to rebuild it.
My Dell Studio XPS experienced extreme slowness about the time Microsoft finished installing the Windows 10 Creators update two weeks ago. The slowness was such that many apps would not load, or would take so long that they would time-out and return an error message, in one case that the program was missing! Some web pages (such as Tecklyfe) would load, but would require one or more refreshes to get videos to load and play. So, there was both slowness, not present before, in the computer itself, but also with accessing web pages, on any of the three browsers I have available (Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Edge).
So, I performed the Paging File changes recommended in the video, and that helped with computer based apps.
I also implemented the Performance Options tweaks recommended.
But, some slowness in loading internet web pages persists. They take way too long. Again, some internet based apps still do not load without a refresh or multiple tries. Once they finally get loaded, they do operate, but not as snappily as they once did two weeks ago.
I’ll be interested in other ways to get the computers previous speed back. Thanks for the tips.
I have just done this but when I went to select the minimum size I had a warning box that if it was changed to less than 400 megabytes then if there was a system error there was no guarantee that what had gone wrong was recorded – in order to help put that right. So what do I do now? I have a new Lenovo brand spanking new in Feb 17 with more bells, whistles and power than I will need. Thanks.
400mb does sound low. If you look at the screenshot, on your computer what is the recommended value? That’s the number you want to use for the Min and Max. I’m guessing it is 1024mb or higher.
changing my settings worked for me
Wow has this made a significant difference to the lagging machine that it once was, the instructions got a bit confusing as to exactly what information to write where but the comments got me thru that.
this help the slow performance problem for my win 10 , but another problem just arised . The MSVCR100.dll was not found….(this problem was the reason why I update my win 10 , and got lag after that ) . Doing this just got me in infinite loop of problems……! please help me !
I tried both of your above suggestions and laptop is back to running like a champ! Thanks!
worked for me, 1894 recommended, i put 3500 for min and max
You really should have been more specific for min and max. I’m assuming you use the recommended setting for both? I’ll try it and hopefully it will help.
That’s correct, you use the recommended setting for both. I’ve re-worded the article a few times to make it clearer. Any suggestions?
Thank you for this fix. I messaged Microsoft about how terrible their windows 10 was, and swore to them I would never buy another Microsoft product.
Your fix did the trick, but I have to wonder, why in the world would they design an operating system that made so many people hate Microsoft?
My computer is functioning like it used to, but when it dies, I’ll be shopping for something other than Microsoft.
Thanks again for sharing this fix.
I am not tech savvy. I have an 8 year old laptop, with not very much ram, a lot of storage space. After the last W10 update, windows was very slow. I used tip #2 only, and it worked perfectly. Windows 10 is snappy and fast again. Thanks!
The first option it’s works with me .. thanks a lot, my laptop was running very slow even when I clicked to start boton it tak around 1 minutes. Thanks again
We are not in ESL 101 just help the poor guy……
This fixed my PC performance! Wow thanks so much.
Worked perfectly, thank you so much. Just recently updated and after installing a few programs I couldn’t even install new stuff and it would take me 3+ mins just to continue through programs or try and change system settings
what a difference! I felt like I was back in 1o95 with Juno dial up until I tried your Option 1 fix. Thank you!
seemed to have helped. My windows 10 sometimes took literally minutes to open up an application or even to switch from one to the other. “Not responding” was an error that i had become used to, just as my typing lagging behind. Seems much better now. Ofcourse it could be just because of a restart, but it seems much better
Hii Robert ,I m using Dell Inspiron 15 ,5000 series with windows 10 and RAM 4GB and 1TB hard disk ,like all my PC is also working too slow . As you instructed first solution i did the same but have little confusion is wat will be the initial size ?? Does intial and final size both will be equal to recommended size??. Please clarify the same as per below my details shown:-
Minimum Allowed 16 MB
Recommended 1394 MB
Wat will be my PC initial and final size as per above detail.
Thanks in advance for your support!!
You would set both to 1394MB based on the information in your comment.
My computer is definitely quicker after making recommenced changes, thanks very much.
The slow internet was very frustrating. This helped! Thank you!
Agree with Ben…it was not clear that the recommended value was to be typed into BOTH boxes. I guessed a lower value for the initial size and a larger value for the maximum size. Must go back and change to same value. I do thank the author for all the hints.
Mr. Russell, THANK YOU! I followed the instructions for both Option 1 and Option 2 and then re-started the laptop. I cannot believe the difference in speed. I was actually contemplating taking my laptop in for service or replacement because it was so slow …. I was waiting several minutes for webpages with a lot of graphics/articles/videos to load before I could even scroll down the page. http://www.si.com took FOREVER…..and just now it completely loaded in less than 30 seconds. Thank you for taking the time to write this, and for making the instructions easy to follow even for someone like me (NOT a techie=significant understatement).
thank you, thank you… followed your instruction for win 8.1 and now it load faster! before it was doing fine, but after i got install net 4.6 it super slow. now i can opened bluestack and chrome at the same time again.
you know what you don’t have to follow any of the things. Just plug in charger it will behave again normally.
I was shocked that this actually did worked somewhat. Although I didn’t know what values to use. I tries to use 16 at first but the system told me to use at least 400 – which I did. It certainly did speed up some loading however when I open windows office it still is quite slow. A good remedy for us that have very little tech knowledge. Thanks a bunch!
Did you try watching the video? I try to explain the values a little better in there. I would try setting both values to at least 2048 though.
Thanks – 55 year-old who knows little about computers and at first glance this has helped enormously…
This post started many moons ago, but…Thank You for the post!!!!!! I’m running an HP with 2 quad core Zeons and 64 GB of DDR3 Ram plus to solid state drives setup on a RAID 0 and my computer has been running slower then my wife’s laptop that has a core 2 duo…. I’ve tried reformatting and so much more and then i seen this post!! Thank You!!!!! Windows had automatically allocated over 46,000 MB and Windows only recommended 7600 MB.
The tips somehow works. Thanks.
Well it’s not perfect but it is so much better now I can actually use it. Thank you so much, you are the first one that actually helped! :)
Thank you! It helped a great deal!
Thanks! I thought I know some computer software as well as hardware. This is awesome.
nice thanks man! now we can live in peace
Thanks my friend. Worked a treat. I can get some of my life back now things are running quicker
Did option 2 and somehow it’s improving. I hope I don’t have to do option 1 as I’m not that techie but hey, I’ll do whatever I can to get this win10 faster 😁
fantastic thanks,,,,
It is still driving me nuts, whatever I do only improves it slightly for a few days then it is as bad as before.
Have you verified that your page file setting sticks after a reboot? Go back into the settings and make sure it’s still set to your custom size.
It is a HP Pavilionx2 detachable and I’ve been told neither are upgradable unfortunately. None of this was mentioned when I bought it not that long ago!
It looks like that’s an entry level laptop/tablet. Most tablet-types aren’t upgradable. If you got an Atom processor it’s going to be slow. It probably has an SSD, so the speed slowdowns would be the processor and the 2GB of RAM.
Oh bugger! I didn’t think £350 was entry level, is there another system I could use that needs less memory? I have tried ubuntu/linux but it was the same.
If you already tried Linux then probably not. Ubuntu is still a pretty heavy OS with its GUI so you could try a lighter weight distro. Maybe Mint.
It wasn’t but I’ve re done it and it makes no difference. Would I be better off buying a new laptop with more than 2GB RAM? My internet here is also poor so I’m not sure what to do next, I don’t want to waste my money on the wrong thing.
When it comes to hardware slowness, RAM and the type of storage drive are 2 big components. 2GB of RAM is pretty low. Is it upgradeable so you could add more without buying a new laptop?
Does it have an SSD drive for storage and an older HDD? If it’s an HDD then that could make a huge difference but depending on the laptop you might not be able to upgrade it.
Thank you so much!!!!!! Tihs tweak was monster my pc rocks !
Best
Now this was Truly Helpful Information ……Maybe we should get you to Tweak the US Govt right now …….or maybe just scrap it ..
Thank you! It’s like having a new laptop. Very clear instructions, and worked like a dream. Will make my working life so much easier!
My computer suddenly ran slow after installing the latest Windows 10 update (on 7 Feb 2019) what a pain in the neck!!!! However, the above seems to have fixed it.
wow awesome, thank you so much…
I’m using a HP , eighth gen. laptop which has a 16GB RAM. I already tried by entering the recommended value but it’s still a little bit slow. What should I do?
I would download and run Aware Removal Tool by TSA the first time I used this over 800 objects were found and afterwards my PC ran smoother and quicker now I only run it every few months.
I mean Adware not Aware
Ironically it has a adult site pop up!
adult site pop ups means it is possible that you have a potentially unwanted program installed on your computer.
That was when I downloaded the adware removal tool
This made a HUGE difference for me. Application switching had slowed down severely after a recent round of updates (from 1903 to 1909 plus the Feb / March 2020 updates). I chose to eliminate the pagefile completely since there is plenty of RAM. Working much better now !
